Banishing Ritual Instructions
A powerful ritual to eliminate draining energies, banish attachments and entities, and put an end to destructive cycles.
When to Perform
- This Banishing Ritual is most potent when done during the Dark Moon or the six days leading up to it.
- This ritual takes less than an hour to perform, including the candle burning time. Please plan accordingly.
You Will Need:
- Old World Witchcraft Banishing Ritual Blend (Also available in a Banishing Ritual Kit)
- 4 Old World Ritual Candles
- Your Choice of Smudge:
- Cedar (Best for Hauntings & Residing/Residual Energies)
- Juniper Smudge Bundle (Quick Endings & New Beginnings)
- Fireproof ritual surface, such as a metal or stone tray.
- Sheet of paper
- Pen/Paper
- Matches or lighter
- Optional: Coffin nail
Create a quiet, sacred space for yourself. Somewhere you will be undisturbed and feel comfortable. If you wish, you can take a salt bath in preparation for the work, which will detoxify the physical body and assist with the spiritual cleansing. If you have not performed a banishing ritual in a long time (or ever) or are physically surrounded by unpleasant influences, it is recommended that you take this step first.
Make sure everything you need for the ritual is out in front of you. No last-minute runs to get matches once the ritual starts. Be fully prepared when you step into your ritual space.
Step 1: Spend some time thinking about specific things you would like to remove from your life or your space.
Examples may include:
"I now remove and permanently banish all negative influences, energies, and entities around me."
"All feelings of ______ are banished and removed from my life."
"{Affliction} is now permanently banished from my life."
This affirmative banishment statement is now your ritual mantra.
Step 2: Write that which you wish to banish on the piece of paper. If all that which you want to banish is longer (or more detailed) than your ritual mantra from Step 1, simply write it all out on the piece of paper. You may use both the front and back.
NOTE: It is worthwhile to mention that it is best to focus on one subject at a time.
Step 3: While chanting your ritual mantra (from Step 1), gently roll four Ritual Candles over the piece of paper. The beeswax picks up the energy of what is stated on the paper. Continue this rolling action until the beeswax candles become warm from the heat of your palms.
Step 4: Place the four Ritual Candles in the center of the statement paper and dust 1/2-1 teaspoon of the Banishing Ritual Blend over them. Firmly roll the Ritual Candles in the Ritual Blend, distributing the herbs throughout the candles and the statement paper.
Step 5: Create a Candle Braid. Gather the four Ritual Candles in your hand, make sure they are lined up evenly. While holding both ends of the candles, gently begin to twist in opposite directions. The motion is similar to wringing out wet laundry. The bottoms (or legs) of the candles should then be untwisted for the last 1/2-1 inch of the candles. Spread each of the candle legs to 4 opposing sides, forming a self-contained base.
This action does two things:
1) It acts as a self-contained candle holder.
2) It activates an energetic center which allows the banishment to distribute through the four directions (North, South, East, West), thus surrounding you. This is an essential part of the ritual. Although the candle legs and the magnetic directions do not need to line up, they must all be pointing in different directions.
Step 6: Place the candle braid directly on top of the statement paper. With strong will-power and determination in your voice, exclaim:
"As I light this candle, I now banish {your ritual mantra (from step 1)}. "
Light the candles and watch the intricacy of the multiple dancing flames unfold. Spend a few minutes in meditation. Imagine that as the candles burn, so too do all the negative things in your life.
Step 7: Holding your chosen smudge bundle, light it from the flame of the candle. The smudge does not need to be burned entirely during each session. Burn and extinguish as needed, about 1" to 2" at a time—light one end of the smudge bundle from the flame of the candle for 15-30 seconds. Carefully move the smoking smudge bundle slowly over your body (do not let it touch your body or your clothes), letting the soft smoke envelop you. To put out the smudge bundle, press the lit end firmly into a fireproof bowl until wholly extinguished.
Step 8: Watch the flames of all four candles closely.
Are the candles hissing or popping?
Are the flames dancing, or are they moderately still?
Did one or more flames extinguish?
Were any of the flames re-lit by the neighboring flame?
Hissing/popping, dancing, and extinguishing candles indicate energetic interference and stagnation. If there is energetic interference, more banishing work will need to be done! Repeat the Banishing Ritual again the following night. Please do not repeat the ritual the same night. You must allow the energies around you to settle and potentially naturally dissipate.
Ideally, you want to see is a fairly still, smooth burn, particularly towards the end of the ritual. This is your green light of everything working in your favor. Do not physically manipulate the candle to burn one way or another.
Remember, the candle is a physical representation of the energies around you. You want it to accurately show you that which you may not be able to see for yourself.
Allow the candles to burn all the way down to the statement paper. More often than not, the candles will extinguish themselves in their own puddle of wax on the statement paper. Stay put the remainder of the burn, do not leave this ritual unattended. If the flame catches the paper on fire, simply blow it out.
The Ritual Candles burn between 20 minutes and 45 minutes, depending on the temperature in the room, the amount of ritual blend used, possible drafts, and of course, the energetic intensity of your spellwork.
Step 9: When the candles extinguish (usually the flame is extinguished its own puddle of wax), you will be left with a wax-covered statement paper. You must dispose of the residual energies by properly disposing of the ritual remnants. A few disposal options include tossing the contents on a railroad, dumping it in the middle of an intersection, or leaving it in a cemetery.
Optional: If this is a particularly negative circumstance you are trying to banish, use a Wrought Iron Coffin Nail as your method of disposal. Grab a hammer and take your Banishing Ritual remnants to the cemetery. Exclaim what you are permanently banishing from your life and strike the Wrought Iron Coffin Nail through the ritual remnants and into the cemetery ground. The spirits of the deceased will take care of the rest! Always throw coins or candy at the gate of the cemetery as you leave. This pleases the gatekeeper spirits and the departed so that no one follows you home. Keep in mind when doing so, one must walk away and not look back. If you can, take a different route home.
Step 10: Upon returning home, light the remaining smudge bundle and walk clockwise around your home, allowing the smoke to drift over each corner of your home. Pay special attention to mirrors, windows, doors, and all reflective surfaces.

Old World Moon Phases
The Moon is of key importance for the Old World Witch. The Moon and its cycle (increase and decrease) impact the potency of rituals and their successes. The Moon amplifies rituals and works in harmony with the energies exerted by the Witch.
As Old World Witches, we utilize elemental forces for magick and mystical significance of the natural world and its fauna and flora: Esoteric knowledge. Lore of healing. Energetic resonance of herbs and roots. And, of course, the Moon.
The Old World Witch does not follow the exact terminology and specifications of modern astrologers and astronomers. We maintain the visual interpretation and energies of the Moon, as explained below.

Dark Moon
When the Moon cannot be seen and is in the dark phase, it is referred to as the Dark Moon in Old World Witchcraft. Modern astronomers and astrologers call this darkness the New Moon because the cycle of the Moon is about to restart.
Old World Witches are not the only ones who follow this Dark Moon terminology. Several ancient cultures (such as Islam) define this period as the end of the month and the very first crescent of the Moon (Witch's New Moon) as the beginning of the month.
The Witch's Dark Moon is a night of stillness, contemplation, and banishment. The only types of rituals that should be done on the Dark Moon are banishment work or curses/hexes. The Dark Moon is also ideal for all kinds of divination and working with the departed.
The Moon is energetically at its lowest point and is more conducive to the mentioned rituals.
Witch's New Moon (first crescent)
The New Moon of the Old World Witch is called the Witch's New Moon. It is when the very first crescent or sliver of the Moon is visible. This is typically 2-3 nights after the Dark Moon.
With some variations, the Witch's New Moon rises in the daytime before noon and becomes visible in the day sky. It will be most visible at sunset and usually sets well before midnight. The Witch's New Moon is the same percentage all over the world - both in the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. However, the tips of the Witch's New Moon point depend on the time, date, and location on Earth.
The Witch's New Moon is the ideal time to begin rituals that draw a life experience, physical possession, or situation to you. This can be for love, money, health, or personal development.
Rituals are best performed for 3-12 consecutive days. This is what leads to powerful, lasting, and most importantly, measurable results. Starting rituals three nights after the Dark Moon will give you exactly 12 days of rituals leading up to the Full Moon.
The Witch's New Moon is also the ideal time to begin a new venture, get married, apply for a job, or embark on a journey.
The same energetic attributes apply throughout the Waxing Moon, all the way up to the Full Moon.
The Full Moon is not only the most magickally potent and powerful time of the month, but it is also the most physically stimulating. As the Moon affects the ocean tides, so too does it affect our bodies. If you pay close attention to your body, you may have noticed that you may feel extra swollen or puffy on the mornings leading up to the full Moon and a couple of days thereafter. These are the days of maxi dresses, undereye concealer, and perhaps an inclination to wear fewer rings on your fingers.
Rituals are best performed for 3-12 consecutive days. This is what leads to powerful, lasting, and most importantly, measurable results. If you have been performing rituals leading up to the Full Moon, consider the night of the Full Moon the climax of your ritual.
The Full Moon signifies the cultivation of goals, the peak of a cycle, and emotional fulfillment. The Full Moon is best used to draw something into your life, such as love, financial prosperity, or self-development.
If, however, you are choosing not to perform any magick on the night of the Full Moon, simply sitting under the moon rays and energetically absorbing the magnetism will reawaken and revitalize your spirit.
Whether you're having a difficult time leaving an unsuitable relationship or are trying to eliminate negative self-talk, the Waning Moon is perfectly capable and willing to help phase out what is no longer needed or wanted.
In addition to removing negative influences from your life, this is also an appropriate time to cast revenge spells (curses).
The Waning Moon reminds us of things yet to be done and that time is slipping away. Anxiety is usually heightened during this time; therefore, self-care is critical.
